Raid Wrap-Up: Mogu’shan Vaults

Posted in World of Warcraft with tags , , , , , on 02/08/2013 by izzicality

My WoW guild Hit it with a Brick is trucking along in raiding, attendance be damned, and can now at least claim Mogu’shan Vaults as a trophy. Usually after Elegon we’d go to Heart of Fear to learn the place more, but why not just beat Will of the Emperor? What much more was there to learn since we all knew it pretty well by now from LFR? And so what was keeping us from just doing it so everyone could at least have that achievement before 5.2 hits? And so we did.

Now while we throw ourselves at Blade Lord Ta’yak in the Heart of Fear (and beyond), I’ll take this moment to compile our encounters of the Vaults…
(I mention hunter stuff in the PoV of being Beast Mastery, but since most of my musing has to do with Talents, which are available to all, or otherwise non-spec-specific things, everyone can follow along! Hooray.)

The Stone Guard: Where tanks disconnect and wild parties are had. The tank swap method is our favored one even now that the fight is long on farm. I still can’t decide if I dislike Jasper Chains or Cobalt Bombs more. Cobalt Bombs may stink but during Cobalt petrifies it is fun as a Hunter to blow Deterrence and fly through as many bombs as possible, preferably to clear room for tanks moreso than anyone else. But with Jasper Chains I have to predict someone else’s movement along with my own and that is not always easy. When you have chains AND landmines, things get four times more fun!

Feng the Accursed: I still enjoy watching this for a gross display of “The Beast Mastery Hunter Opener”. Sadly, Lynx Rush isn’t quite the same now as it was then. I can still manage impressive numbers on pulls without it. We like to call this fight “the one where boss timers start being wrong in phase 3 and we have to just always assume a Resonance is going to go out right before a Velocity, regardless of what the timers say.”

Gara’jal the Spiritbinder: We had so many 1% wipes to this guy before we got him down. There is nothing more frustrating than that. After you get past the somewhat kooky mechanics of the spirit realm, things aren’t so bad.
I have to say, of all of the videos, it was this one and the Stone Guard videos that I had music planned out for months in advance. That’s probably why they’re also the two I sped up to fit the songs used, because I wanted them no other way.

The Spirit Kings: These kings gained a fixed spawn order by the time we got to them, but by “fixed” apparently the devs meant “the last two like to swap places a lot. Even now, it’s a total toss up whether Meng or Zian pops out after Subetai is down. And if we have a durr moment and need to do a second attempt in the night, it can change even then! Also, if Meng is third, every Maddening Shout will coincide with a Flanking Orders. Every single one for the rest of the fight. I suppose it’s to make up for the fact that as a guild raid group we’re not blasting slows and stuns all over each other like you’re apt to see on an average LFR run. Flanking Orders also has been shown to have a very screwy hit box, clipping people who run behind them, for example.
Thinking about it, but never tested myself, a Survival Hunter probably is not well-liked during Maddening Shout. One Multi Shot and you’ve just dotted up your entire raid. Explosive Trap works just fine, though. But I can imagine it’s very hard not to hit Multi Shot when there’s all those targets… Oh… I love speccing Survival for Heart of Fear’s Trash, and on Wind Lord in LFR. It’s the greatest AoE… I digress.

Elegon: Very nearly the bane of my existence. How this wasn’t the final boss I have no clue. There is a lot of information being flung at every player and a lot of micromanagement going down. The Fervor talent for Hunters became my best friend here, and swift direction of my pet was key for Draw Power sparks.

finally, Will of the Emperor: I boggle at how the normal version is a carbon copy of the LFR version, where everything hits harder. That’s basically it. Can your tanks skillfully maneuver most (if not all) of the Devastating Combos? Same with melee if you have any? (We didn’t.) Are your ranged on top of killing adds in varying priorities? Are you CCing the Emperor’s Rages like no tomorrow? This is in the bag. I wonder, how would this have gone without LFR to have practiced dancing on…? Probably would have been a lot like Nefarian was back in tier 11… as our GM/MT Liedel would bring up, tanking the adds and kiting them from Shadowflame in Phase 3 was a very frustrating concept in that he could only practice it during the encounter itself. Notice on the video how both tanks are very high on the meters by the end due to Opportunistic Strikes damage. That’s how much LFR practice they’ve gotten to do! I’d mark that as a positive for LFR, really.
As far as hunter things go: Binding Shot is fantastic here for Rage adds. Murder of Crows makes for a very fun opener with Readiness to have it up on both boss statues once they’re in place. I kept my pet on a boss unless an Emperor’s Courage was nearby to chew on. I mostly just wanted the least downtime for my pet (too much time moving around otherwise).

By the way, the guild is recruiting. We’re obviously not hardcore-progressive raiding, but we raid and we clear content. On good attendance streaks we’ve cleared tiers while current and done a few Heroic modes before nerfs, but this time around we’re probably not going to quite make it… because of attendance. If you DPS (or heal, could use an extra heal I guess), are usually around between 8pm and 11pm Eastern time, and like relaxed environments, we are Horde-side, US realm Shu’halo, <Hit it with a Brick>.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present the newest bane of my existence

UNLEASHTHEKRAKENPlaying this will probably be nothing like when I import Pokémon games and only have to worry about monster and attack names. Thanks to the Kizuna Rank/Combo system (aka my self-titled “dating sim” experience) I actually have to PAY ATTENTION to dialogue. Story-wise, I’ve memorized the show by now so I’m not too worried.

Happy 2013

Boy oh boy what a smudge fest! That’s the downside of drawing with pencils.

Neilaren Brightstone makes the same resolutions each new year:

1. I will not tease my husband anymore.
2. I will strive to break the first resolution even quicker than I did the previous year.

There’s many things to celebrate on the WoW front: patch 5.2 is bringing some neat looking gear sets (I really like the hunter tier 15, and I do like the mage as well, but now I like it a bit less after having to draw it — eesh!) and Dire Horns! I’m pretty sure those refer to the soon-to-be-added triceratops models. I am definitely planning and hoping to update my devilsaur to the new model, and I’ll probably snag one of these Dire Horns — just need to have a nice name I’ll love for it.

Also, last night my weekly Sunwell run gave me the hunter-coveted Thori’dal, the Stars’ Fury! After having to do 28 Blackwing Lair runs for the Dragonbreath Hand Cannon, and not having seen Taoren the Soul Burner drop yet on my visits to Lei Shi (in LFR, because we haven’t gotten that far in normal raiding yet…) only having to do 11 runs for this legendary artifact is a breather. Now to hope that transmogging into legendary weapons will eventually become a reality (and that doing so will also bring over the sparkly visual used whenever I fire a shot with this bad boy — so pretty!)

So in general, here is to a new year of the creative process!

Nether Rayyyyyy

See, I have this thing where since Blizzard has little to next to no information about Nether Rays, biology and behaviors and etc., aside from some snippets in quest logs and now some flavor text from battle pets, I’ve ended up making up my own “headcanon” for the beasts.

For example, how they actually fly seems to be all speculation, but regardless of the methods, I imagine that the fry of nether ray clutches cling to their mother’s back until they can hover about on their own.

Terrato in particular is suspected to be the runt of his clutch, so his clingy behaviors would last for quite awhile, and of course, transfer to his adoptive mommy Neilaren.
Having a FULLY GROWN Nether Ray perch on your head probably isn’t heavy — consider that at this point, he’s floating fine, just expressing affection.

This late night doodle was prompted by a particularly frustrating week of “I lost the Random Number Generator” game. No loot, no pet battle fun, no catching a break anywhere. Times like this, especially if we’re having a raid attendance drop, make me question just what part of World of Warcraft I find fun… it definitely isn’t anything RNG-related. I certainly don’t win loot and I never expect to. If I’m not raiding, “playing with friends” gets cut out of the picture, too. Even besides WoW, I was just not having the most positive of weekends. I spent much of Saturday in a lethargic torpor, at my lowest point. But even when I do not love the game I am playing, the nether ray-shaped mass of pixels named Terrato loves me… and I love nether rays. So the best cathartic plan at 3 AM Sunday night is to draw Terrato giving out his best attempt at a hug (what I dub “The Therapeutic Head Nom”).

At this angle, he looks a lot like a very cute Metroid. I suppose he is literally hugging a face, here, too.

Another Kid Icarus comic

I had started this one a few months back, but Pit is just too detailed to really focus on… I end up forgetting to finish it for months. Palutena’s kinda fun to draw, though.

Palutena is such a troll. Anything to rub salt in the wounds!

In other news, raids have finally started back up in World of Warcraft; Be sure to head over to my YouTube channel and check them out. This time around, I made a splash screen introduction for my guild, featuring a silly logo and a cute little 8-bit composition, which will be accompanying all future videos.

I did the Fall of Theramore Scenario for Both Factions

Posted in Drawing, World of Warcraft on 09/18/2012 by izzicality

I can’t say I am very enthused about the story direction going on in World of Warcraft (Pandaria is great, just. not. the Horde development. Gah.) but I’ll save that rant because I’ve gone into great detail to several people now how it just irritates me as a storytelling type and character designer to play and just watch them give up on doing anything with Garrosh Hellscream hence leading us down the predictable routes.

Anyway, on the Horde version of this new Scenario you rescue a spy in Theramore! Except he is kind of sassy and all “Hey, you gonna free me or DO YOU HAVE OTHER IDEAS?”
I was like “Yeah, my idea is to go right upside your head”.

And then there was Tuesday Maintenance today, so I drew a comic related to it, relating to my WoW character (Neilaren Brightstone) and one of my boyfriend’s (Liedel Sunstorm) since we did the scenario on them.

A transposition here because handwriting and unfortunate space issues with text placement:

(panel 1)
Thalen: So… Ladies. Got any plans before freeing little old me?
Neilaren: Yes. Punching you straight to the moon. Go home.
Liedel: I’m SAVING PEOPLE.
(panel 2)
Thalen: …No? Well, you’re both welcome to come hang out with me in Silvermoon sometime…
Liedel: Paladin is credit to team!
Neilaren: Look, Sassypants. I am married. She is naive.
Thalen: …Married? Why limit yourself, Sexy?
(*BESTIAL WRATH*)
(panel 3)
*as Thalen is being punched straight to the moon (or cross-realm-zone or whatever)*
Liedel: … Friend Neilaren… He was our way to go home.
Neilaren: We have HEARTHSTONES, you twit!

Welcome to World of Warcraft Patch 5.0.4

Posted in Drawing, World of Warcraft on 08/28/2012 by izzicality

Two of the biggest changes for Hunters this patch are:

No more minimum range, so I can finally stack on melee and hit the boss! No more isolated Hunter requiring dedicated healing!

There’s only one main weapon slot, so we will no longer be equipping our polearms and staves (and swords, and axes, and dagger, and fist weapons…) We can still equip them but then we can’t attack. 8) I’m keeping some of my favorites and sentimental valued items to idle around town with…

Oh, did I say “idle around town”? I meant

Well at least Terrato’s really happy about all of this.

What was that, Shannox? You want me to transmog back into the armor set that utilizes your glorious scalp?

Maybe I will… when that gun from BWL finally drops. 20 runs and not a single drop, on a 13% drop rate, story of my life.

No, Terrato, be a good nether ray.

Pokémon Conquest Spreadsheet

Posted in Pokémon, SPREADSHEETS! with tags on 07/25/2012 by izzicality

I made a really thorough spreadsheet documenting everything I’ve acquired and everything I need to acquire in Pokémon Conquest, using Numbers on my native computer, but I just finished “importing” it to a Google Docs for general viewing.

Access it here. Comments within the document should explain how I labeled things.

Besides keeping track of my own game completion, it’s also a very good resource for things like stats, locations and evolution requirements.
I got all of my information from http://wiki.grovyle.net/ranse/ (translating as needed, of course), so I’m 93.14% certain of its authenticity (so, Ninety-Pi percent) …Of course, I’ll always edit as needed.

This post brought to you by my prodigious love of spreadsheets!
